The past few months have been an onslaught of WTF. Human beings are hurting right now. Our friends and neighbors are hurting right now. From the challenges that an unprecedented global pandemic has shown all of us to the tensions that are running through our neighborhoods, emotions are high and anxiety about the future is a constant. People have lost their jobs, businesses are struggling, and members of our community are trying desperately to have their voices heard and understood.
It may seem like the negativity of 2020 is overwhelming and never-ending, or like there is nothing that you as an individual can do. That’s not true. Whether it’s reaching out to a friend, donating to a cause, educating yourself, opening up a dialogue, or embracing the emotions we are all feeling, there are always actions to be taken, no matter how big or small. Finding a healthy way to channel those emotions is key. One foot in front of the other, one rep at a time, is how you make change in yourself, and thus change in the world around you.
It is imperative to maintain and improve your physical and mental health at times like these. If you are feeling: grief, guilt, hate, rage, privilege, depression, oppression…your feelings are valid….and you need to find the root cause, not put a band aid on the symptoms. Finding the cure to systemic issues like racism or mental health issues like depression begins with introspection and then action.
